South Lane County Fire & Rescue (SLCF&R) proudly serves both residents and visitors in Creswell, Cottage Grove and rural South Lane County. SLCF&R provides fire protection, rescue, emergency medical services, fire prevention and code enforcement services, per ORS Chapter 478. SLCF&R is located just south of the Eugene / Springfield area of western Oregon, along the I-5 corridor. The areas previously served by the Cottage Grove Fire Department, the Creswell Rural Fire Department, and the South Lane Rural Fire Department, were merged into the South Lane County Fire and Rescue district in 2003.
SLCF&R serves about 25,000 people within the 132 square miles of the Fire District. The District includes the cities of Cottage Grove and Creswell as well as the small communities, neighborhoods and rural areas surrounding them. The ambulance service area (ASA) covers an area of about 800 square miles which includes the fire district. In 2011, the District responded to nearly 2,978 emergency and non-emergency calls for service. Of those, 2,600 were EMS related and the remaining 378 were Fire/ Misc. Of the ambulance calls, 8 in 10 are transported, with 75% going to Eugene or Springfield hospitals. The 15 career firefighter/paramedics, 40 volunteers, two administrative personnel, Training Officer and the Fire Chief operate out of stations located in Cottage Grove, Creswell, Saginaw, and in the Camas Swale area. The district operates with a permanent property tax rate of $1.0335 per $1,000 of assessed value. The rate was established in 2003 when the new district was formed. The District's revenue comes from property taxes (55%), billings for ambulance services and FireMed membership fees (44.5%), and other income (less than 1%).
